Lara Şarlak obtained her B.A. degrees in Sociology and Media & Visual Arts from Koç University in 2015. Awarded with the Jean Monnet Scholarship Programme, she completed her master’s degree in Anthropology of Media at SOAS, University of London. Her MA dissertation explores return migration movements reflected on Turkish-German diasporic cinema. Shortly after graduating, she moved to Pucallpa, a major urban center in the Peruvian Amazon, to volunteer as a videographer in a grassroots organization that devoted itself to the well-being of indigenous Shipibo peoples. In 2017, she joined the project as a research assistant.
