Alvaro Comin’s research has been focused on a variety of topics in the sociology of Latin American development and the comparative study of emerging countries. These include the impact of higher education expansion on economic restructuring in Brazil and India; regional development and social inequalities in emerging countries; labour force dynamics in São Paulo; economic policy and cities in the Global South; and the history of economic thought, including the work of Brazilian economist Celso Furtado.
